-Written by the Publicize team Publicize was very proud to host a webinar by Forbes Journalist Freddie Dawson on August 5th. Freddie’s insightful talk covered how startups and smaller businesses can manage their PR by focusing on press releases, pitching, and finding the right journalists and publications. Freddie delved into the intricacies of contacting journalists and included useful tips on making that all-important first contact, using tools like Twitter or Linkedin to stand out from the crowd. Freddie also explained the “dos” and “don’ts” when it comes to writing a pitch email. We were also interested to hear how you can strike the correct balance between information and intrigue with an email subject line. Freddie was clear on stressing that we have to catch a journalist’s eye without sounding too much like clickbait. Finally, the webinar discussed the importance of researching both the publication and journalist – making sure that your press release is both newsworthy and right for them. Freddie also included invaluable writing tips for those creating their own press releases, and expressed his views about the benefits of exclusives versus embargoes, and other methods of outreach. We all took away important and practical advice from the session, […]

Can You Tie Your Guest Blogs Back to Sales?

by Gracelyn Tan Ladd @ BuzzStream

We’ve seen time and time again that high quality guest content can have enormous benefits as part of a digital marketing campaign. Yet when it comes to reporting on their contribution on sales, their impact has traditionally been much harder to measure. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that it is both worthwhile and simple to report on revenue and conversions from a guest blogging campaign. In our experience, many content marketers shy away from these figures for two main reasons. The first is the volumes are usually very low, as a direct sale resulting from one of these pieces can be much scarcer than from other channels such as paid or organic search. The second is that this may distract from the primary focus of the campaign, which could be to raise a brand’s profile or generate valuable links for SEO. The latter is a fair point, although in our opinion, it’s used too often as an excuse to not examine the effectiveness of a campaign in enough depth. Instead, even if sales volumes are low, there is much to be learned from assessing the overall impact of your guest blogging work. Tracking referrals When trying to understand revenue from guest blogs, the simplest thing to do is to take a look at your Referrals report in Google Analytics. Here, you can see the domains that have sent you traffic over your selected reporting period. Below you can see one recent example from Smashing Magazine that points to the Ad-Rank site. If you have goal and ecommerce tracking set up, you’ll be able to view these figures against each domain. So far, so simple. In terms of insight though, this isn’t that in-depth. We’re pretty much just seeing how many sales or conversions each referring domain is […]

3 Powerful B2B Influencer Marketing Strategies for 2017 (with Examples)

by Gracelyn Tan Ladd @ BuzzStream

When most people think about what influencer marketing includes they tend to think of B2C tactics: “product reviews,” “endorsements,” “sponsored social posts” and other paid promotion approaches. While, those are all tactics in the influencer marketing suite, influencer marketing doesn’t stop at B2C industries. Choosing the right B2B service or product provider can be tough, and there might be many touchpoints necessary before deciding; including consideration of influencer opinions. In fact, according to a study by Twitter & Annalect, 49% of people say they rely on recommendations from influencers when making purchase decisions. Influencer marketing, defined simply, is the art of building relationships with those who your target audience is already engaging with or influenced by. The B2B space is no different, just a little more complex and convoluted! Let’s use how I found Buzzstream as an example to look at the “points of influence” for a B2B audience. Here was my path to BuzzStream use for our team: Point of Influence #1: Google search We were searching for an alternative platform to one we were outgrowing for link development and influencer outreach efforts. Point of Influence #2: A colleague’s referral A co-worker at Vertical Measures raved about BuzzStream because they’d used it at a past agency—I was intrigued so I did some research. Point of Influence #3: An influencer article I took to sources I trusted, Point Blank SEO being one where I found this article about outreach platforms helpful. I read tons of comparison articles at this point evaluating all my options. I wasn’t committed or completely sold on BuzzStream yet, but it pushed me in that direction. Point of Influence #4: More influencer reviews… I continued reading reviews on the platform from sources I tend to agree with. Such as this review of BuzzStream’s features on Page One […]

Help us design auto-followups in the Outreach Module!

by Paul May @ BuzzStream

Hi everyone, Now that we’ve added bulk send to BuzzStream, we’ve begun the work on “outreach sequences” (which will include auto-followups). The feedback we received from all of you during the ‘bulk send’ design process was incredibly helpful and we’re looking forward to your help designing sequences. I’m hoping you can help by: providing your overall impressions of the value and usability let us know if there are things that would make it more valuable for you provide your thoughts on the importance of some of the things we’ve left off for now. So here’s a video and a set of screenshots that walks through the capabilities.     What is a Sequence? A sequence is a pre-configured workflow that automates steps in the outreach process and helps keep you focused on the right outreach activities.  Each step consists of a trigger (e.g., “if the recipient doesn’t reply in 3 days” or “if the recipient doesn’t open the email within 5 days”) and an action that you want BuzzStream to take (e.g., “automatically send a followup email” or “remind me to followup with this message”). Creating a Sequence When you create a new sequence, you’ll be taken to this screen: In the left column, you’ll name your sequence and add your emails. In the right column, you’ll define the settings for the sequence. Creating the initial email You can either write the email by hand or copy it from an existing template. If you want to include a template in your email, you’ll click ‘copy from a Template’ and select the Template. Adding a step to your sequence After you’ve added your initial email, you can click ‘Add a step’ to add an automated followup or a followup reminder. Each step includes the following components: An email message The action […]

Track Opens and Clicks from Your Custom Domain

by Gracelyn Tan Ladd @ BuzzStream

Today, we’re proud to showcase a new capability that gives you more control over your emails, and can potentially improve your deliverability. Introducing the ability to use your own custom domain when tracking email opens and clicks. …Yeah. I didn’t get what that phrase meant the first time I heard it either. It may sound like complex and jargon-y, but it’s actually pretty simple. Let’s walk through what custom domain tracking means, how it can benefit you, and how you can set it up. How open and click tracking works currently BuzzStream uses one of our BuzzStream domains to track your opens and clicks. That means when you turn on open tracking, we add an invisible pixel linking to our domain so we know when it’s been opened, and when you turn on click tracking, we replace your link with a link to our domain, which then redirects the recipient to your link. The good news is that using our domain makes it easy to turn tracking on. The bad news is that your emails include links to a domain that you don’t control, and that can affect your deliverability and sender score. Why tracking through your own custom domain is better A custom tracking domain is a way to track your opens and clicks using your own domain. That means when you send emails from BuzzStream and want to track email activity, you’ll use your own domain instead of BuzzStream’s. There are a number of benefits to utilizing your own domain to track your email opens and clicks, the two big ones being: 1. More control over your email deliverability and sender reputation Many factors contribute to building a good send reputation over time, and your reputation affects your deliverability. (With the less reputable email service providers think you […]

Could your kids become the future financial wizards?

by Conrad Egusa @ Publicize – Startup PR Company

The founders of Sniggle Zoo realized that raising kids to be money-smart is essential for their development.  As kids struggle to manage finances when they get older, especially when dealing with university debt or buying items on credit, they can be lead to bankruptcy if they aren’t properly educated. Early education helps to determine a child’s decision-making process as they get older — and what could be more important than a solid foundation in successful financial management? Sniggle Zoo has created a youth marketing program called “The Money Mammals” where credit unions are connected with families and schools through online games, offline activities, financial literacy apps and more. The program provides banking activities that encourage interest in money smarts, for kid’s aged 11 and under. Tell us about yourself and the founding of your company. My wife and I knew we wanted to raise money-smart kids. The seeming randomness of our own behaviors – she a spendthrift from day one and I the markedly less frugal son of a banker – inspired us to figure out a way to help kids become more financially aware. Parents needed a program to help them help their kids become “money comfortable” – a tool to […]

Never leave the house blindly again: answering life’s big and little questions with uCiC photo app

by Conrad Egusa @ Publicize – Startup PR Company

Why is uCiC so amazing ? We have all been there. You spend ages preparing a picnic and squeezing onto public transport only to arrive at your favourite city park and find it mobbed, with no space left for your smoked salmon sandwiches and chilled chardonnay. Or you pressure your friends out into the rain to hit a new nightlife hotspot, only to walk into an empty strobe lit room with a bored looking bar-staff to keep you company. How many times have you said, “If I had known it would be like this, I would have stayed at home”? Toronto-based entrepreneur Sukhsagar Singh and former NASA space engineer Harleen Kaur created a digital “magic looking glass” to save you this time and frustration with their new information and video/photo sharing app, uCiC (You See I See). The mobile app allows information seekers to select a user anywhere in the world and ask a question, receiving a video or photo in response. Users can search by ZIP code, a famous landmark or attraction, and view all uCiC users in the area. The app now connects people in 120 countries, giving users the ability to target individuals active in the […]

How to Write the Perfect Blog Post Introduction (Step-by-Step)

by Gracelyn Tan Ladd @ BuzzStream

Crafting the perfect blog post introduction can be the difference between being average, and being above-average. Yawn. Let’s try that again. Blow your intro and no-one will read your post. Nail it and they will. Better, right? The average blog post doesn’t get read, shared, or liked, and it doesn’t generate leads. (Source: Content, Shares, and Links: Insights from Analyzing 1 Million Articles.) If you’re going to write a blog post, you have to make it an above-average one. And give it a killer intro that doesn’t put your audience to sleep, or they’ll never know how great it is. Get it right, and move from the average posts that get no attention at all, to the ones that are still floating around social a year or two after publication. That are generating leads years after publication. (Source: Inbound Marketing: Targeting The Buyer’s Journey.) A blog post is a funnel. The headline sells the intro. The intro sells the post. The post generates engagement, awareness and leads. Every stage must be strong. A weak headline means no-one will even read the intro. Weak intro? No-one will read even the first of your seven reasons, five ways or whatever. Your content upgrades won’t help you build your list, and your carefully-crafted calls to action won’t even be seen. As we’ve seen, ‘whatever’ is pretty much the reaction the average blog post gets. And it’s mostly based on the intro, because that’s as far as most folks read. Write a killer intro and you persuade the reader that your post is of value, so that they’ll follow an argument you present or a new idea, even if it takes several paragraphs to come into focus. To present readers something of value you have to give them new facts and new ideas, and […]

We’ll be increasing this over the next few weeks. We’ll be adding a new dynamic field called “greeting” in the next few weeks. This will give you a way to put in a fallback greeting when you don’t have a person’s first name (e.g., replacing “Hi [FirstName],” with “Hi there,”) I’m looking forward to your feedback! You Can Now Send Emails in Bulk

by Gracelyn Tan Ladd @ BuzzStream

Personalized outreach is the most effective kind of outreach. (Though you already know that.) But what if you’re sending a press release to a publication list? Maybe relaying a general announcement to contacts you know well? Or just plain following-up on a personalized outreach campaign you sent earlier? Well, you now have a more efficient outreach option to help you conquer these exact hurdles and more. Today, we’re proud to introduce the ability to send emails in bulk. With just a few clicks, you can email a list of contacts simultaneously, making it faster to send campaigns that don’t require as much personalization so you can dramatically speed up your outreach. How to Send Emails in Bulk To send in bulk, select the contacts you would like to email from either the Websites or People tab. Then go to Outreach, and select “Bulk Send.” From here, choose which email to send from, and select your template. You can also set your desired send settings, like reminders, open and click tracking, and unsubscribe message, making all of your emails consistent and helping you keep track of your conversations. Once you’re done, hit “Next: Review.” Now you can see how your merge fields will be filled in, preview the emails one by one so you can make sure they’re exactly what you want, and send yourself a test email just to be extra, extra sure. If any contacts need to be reviewed before you send your email, you can view them in the “Needs Review” tab. Once you’ve corrected any errors or removed them from your list, you can select “Next: Confirm” to review your settings one more time, see how many emails you’re sending, and send away. If the number of emails you want to send will exceed your daily send limit, […]

What PR Leaders Should Know About SEO - BuzzStream

BuzzStream

If you’re a PR leader, you’ve probably spent a lot of time thinking about SEO. Why? Because you’re getting mixed messages. While some experts tell you that search engine optimization is obsolete, others will tell you that this marketing technique is more important than ever.  As a PR leader, which perspectives should you follow? The short answer: neither and both. The long answer: keep reading to find out. In this guide, we’ll demystify the jargon, share some SEO basics, and give you some pointers for high-impact decisions to make. We’ll walk you through a little bit of backstory, along with tips showing how SEO can fit into your strategic PR agenda. From there, we’ll recommend some specific tactics to try. Let’s get to it. Some SEO Backstory: UX, Relevance to PR, and More Search is where your target audiences go when they have a question or need information, fast. If your website populates among Google’s top-3-results for a high search volume keyword, you’ll generate an influx of free, organic, and relevant web traffic. In terms of traffic acquisition, high search rankings are a marketer’s dream. That’s why, years ago, marketers and shady search engine optimization specialists started “gaming” Google’s algorithm by paying for links, writing spammy content, and using aggressive tricks–a term that veterans of the industry call “blackhat SEO.” It wasn’t a pretty ecosystem, and tactics frustrated users. But companies were able to generate significant web traffic and make a lot of money—that is, until the wrath of Google’s Panda algorithm. Almost overnight, Google destroyed the universes (and revenue streams) of millions of shady marketers, and ever since, the search giant has been releasing a series of algorithm updates that make blackhat SEO even more impossible. This series of changes has raised the strategic question of whether SEO is …

You probably know what HARO is. You may have even responded to a few of the emails. But here’s the real question: Is responding to HARO queries worth your time today? And if it is, how do maximize your efforts? In 2008, PR guru Peter Shankman would regularly receive requests from the press looking for sources on everything from professional gardeners to Fortune 100 CTO’s. Peter compiled all of these expert requests, and started sending a daily summary email to his massive subscriber list of PR pros and experts. And thus, Help a Reporter Out, or HARO was born. HARO’s list has only grown in subscribers since then. But even with that kind of growth, you can still catch the attention of journalists if you act quickly, and arm yourself with the right knowledge. In this guide, you’ll get the answers to the following questions (that are also quick links if you want to jump to that section): What basics about HARO do I need to know? How can I tell if responding to HARO inquiries is worth my time today? Subscribing to HARO: Should I use the free version, or go for a paid subscription? How to Outreach Journalists in the Age of “Churnalism”

by Alex Cassidy @ VerveSearch

‘Churnalism is a form of journalism in which press releases, stories provided by news agencies, and other forms of pre-packaged material, instead of reported news, are used to create articles in newspapers and other news media.’ Churnalism is a reality for many editorial teams in 2017. They no longer have the luxury of spending hours […]

The Guide to Finding Content Ideas That Will Naturally Earn Links

by Gracelyn Tan Ladd @ BuzzStream

I’m going to tell you something I probably shouldn’t. You can earn links with your content…without doing any outreach. I know. This is a strange message to get from someone who works at BuzzStream. (We’ll see for how much longer. Have mercy, Paul!) But it’s true. And now, you’re about to learn the step by step process for finding content ideas that will naturally earn links, courtesy of Dan Shure, owner of Evolving SEO, and host of Experts on the Wire. During our webinar on linkable content types with Dan, we covered multiple tactics, best practices, and tools that can help you solve the issue of finding the right topics for your content. Here’s all of the context behind it, the step by step process from the webinar (demonstrated on three example websites), and links to resources like the webinar recording, Dan’s notes, and his recommended reading. What is a linkable content idea? Right now, tons of people are googling for stats, data, and facts to bolster their content. Heck, you may have done it once or twice yourself when putting together a blog post, social media post, or outreach email template. The best part about these searches is that the people searching want to link to a source. They want to cite a third party to add authority to their message. That means if you answer their question, provide them with the stat or fact they need, and they find you in their search, they’ll hand you a link. No proactive outreach needed (though you should keep up your outreach efforts in other areas, of course). The links come to you. Now, there are two requirements needed on your end before you create this kind of naturally linkable content: A focus on which “intent to link” keywords you’ll be targeting (which we’ll talk more about in […]

UBO – Wait less and live more with one stop valet and parking app

by Conrad Egusa @ Publicize – Startup PR Company

Why is UBO making urban car owners lives so much easier? City life waits for no one. Arriving late for a meeting or hospital appointment armed only with the excuse that you couldn’t find a parking space is unlikely to win you sympathy. While you can leave the car at home and jump on public transport, anyone who has arrived at an important business meeting sweaty and dishevelled after a trip on a packed metro knows that this is often not a viable option. The new UBO car valet and parking app eliminates the need to worry about parking and makes city driving hassle and stress-free The densely-populated city of Bejing — with narrow streets containing more than 23,000 people per square kilometer — is at odds with intensive car usage. Parking spaces are scarce, and drivers are competing with 5.48 million drivers for 2.7 million registered car spaces each time they take their car into the city. Rather than waste hours stuck in busy traffic searching for free spaces, users can simply download the iOS or Android UBO app and drive their vehicle to a convenient Ubo service station. They will then be driven to their desired destination by […]
